Quick take: Axios is dedicated to providing trustworthy, award-winning news content in an audience-first format. Axios Local now publishes daily newsletters in 31 cities across America and we’re growing. We are hiring an editor to bolster our team in the South region, including coverage of Charlotte, Raleigh, Nashville, Atlanta, New Orleans and soon-to-launch Huntsville, Alabama.

Why it matters: This individual will work with a regional editor, other peer editors and reporters across the region to guide Axios’ coverage in the South providing utility and connecting with audiences in the communities we cover.

Go deeper: We are looking for someone who cares deeply about the future of local news and is obsessed with innovative ways to reimagine it. The ideal candidate will edit big-picture items from cities across the South, but also recognize when a fun local talker should lede the day. Primary responsibilities include:

• Oversee and edit the production of daily local news coverage in Axios Local's cities in the South.

• Work with reporters to help shape stories and edit in Smart Brevity. 

• Assist with research on important topics, events, and trends driving the conversation.

• Write stories and newsletter items in partnership with reporters when needed.

• Manage multiple reporting teams in cities across the South.

The details: Ideal candidates will embody an entrepreneurial spirit, and a passion for Axios’ mission and have the following skills and qualities:

• Preferably is located in the South with a deep sense for the culture.

• Proven editing experience in a fast-paced newsroom. (Experience editing daily newsletters is a plus.)

• A deep understanding of the South and how politics, business, tech and culture impact the region.

• Ability to assign and manage multiple stories at once.

• Confidence working in a remote-first environment.

• Experience managing reporters at varying levels of seniority.

• A belief in Smart Brevity as the core style of Axios.

Starting salary for this role is in the range of $87,000 - $92,000 and is dependent on numerous factors, including but not limited to location, work experience, and skills. This range does not include other compensation and benefits. Axios' compensation philosophy takes into account cost of labor differentials across the country. Because this is a remote-optional job posting, this salary range takes into account all possible locations within the United States, but candidates will only be eligible for the salary range for their location.
