They may also be required to attend residencies or travel for work-related purposes. The Mental Health Counseling program focuses on preparing students academically, professionally and personally to become skilled counselors.   The philosophical foundation of the program is based on: a) the scholar-practitioner model, b) culturally relevant pedagogy and practice, c) academic and experiential learning and d) developmental instruction that includes an emphasis on personal growth. The scholar-practitioner training model is designed to develop students who integrate skills, knowledge and research into practice.   The M.S. in Mental Health Counseling program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), an independent accrediting agency recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation that accredits counselor preparation master's degree programs. CACREP accreditation attests to the quality and relevancy of our program.

REMOTE - If you live over 50 miles from Adtalem offices in Chicago, IL, Addison, IL Columbia, MD Minneapolis, MN, and Miramar, FL, this role is remote.  However, occasional office visits may be required based on business needs, with advance communication for such requests. 

Job Description

Training: All new Faculty Members receive specific training from Walden University in the techniques of online teaching, use of an electronic learning platform, specifics of the policies, procedures, and degree programs of the School or College in which they are going to teach, socialization into the Walden University culture, assessment of the academic integrity of student work, and research supervision of theses and dissertations.  Course Teaching/Availability: Faculty Members are assigned a course, which is taught using the Canvas platform and are responsible for interacting with students within this platform. Discussion Boards for classrooms are open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Although postings to the classroom may be done at any time of day, they must be completed in a timely manner in accordance with the Faculty Handbook or other criteria established by Walden University. As such, Faculty Members are expected to be in the classroom a minimum of 4 days per week and responses to student questions must be posted within 48 hours. Faculty Members are required to verify the accuracy of student postings and submissions and to provide feedback and grades to students through Canvas. In addition, Faculty members will publish their availability to students through course syllabi. The university suggests regular and predictable availability, such as online office hours or regular online chats. Travel Requirements: Some travel could be required (minimally once per quarter)  Residencies: Contributing Faculty may be asked to attend residencies/Pre-practica held domestically, where they will teach intensives and colloquia, and facilitate school and university-wide discussions. Tools/Technical Skills: To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Contributing faculty may complete training in dissertation chairing and service and are eligible to serve on doctoral dissertations.

Qualifications

Technology Requirements: Faculty members are required to have an adequate computer to handle an electronic learning platform, keyboard, pointing device, and computer monitor. All other tools are knowledge-based or training-based through Walden University. The Faculty Member must be able to use Microsoft Office products (MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint), zip software, and Adobe Acrobat and must have reliable Internet access as well as alternate access in cases where primary access becomes unavailable.   Licensing/Certification: Faculty Members must be appropriately credentialed, possess an earned degree from an accredited institution or recognized by a country's ministry of education in the discipline being taught, and may be expected to be licensed or license-eligible in order to teach in specific programs. Faculty Members must maintain their licenses and any appropriate certifications in order to continue to teach at Walden University. Faculty Members are also expected to maintain currency with research by reviewing articles, journals, and presentations. If participating in research, the Faculty Member may publish and acknowledge Walden University. 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Earned doctorate in Counselor Education from a CACREP accredited program.

  • Current state licensure as a Counselor.

  • Minimum of three years of experience teaching and mentoring Master's and/or Doctoral level students, including directing thesis/dissertation research preferred.

  • Ability to provide leadership and mentoring for students in the research process and a strongly student-centered nature.

  • Interest in establishing a community of counseling students

  • Ability to provide support in program assessment.

  • Ability to assume a significant role in addressing student questions and concerns about the program.

  • Experience supervising students in their field training experience. Commitment to the goals of diversity and social change.

  • Ability to work with non-traditional students.

  • Ability to participate in residencies/pre-practica, national faculty meetings and other work-related travel, if needed

Work Environment: Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment but may involve exposure to moderate noise levels. Work involves operation of personal computer equipment for six to eight hours daily and includes physical demands associated with a traditional office setting (e.g., walking, standing, communicating, and other physical functions as necessary).

Additional Information

In support of the pay transparency laws enacted across the country, the expected compensation rate for this position is as follows:

  • Graduate Course Instruction: $1,560 - $4,080 per Quarter or Semester, depending on type of course taught and length of course

  • Undergraduate Course Instruction: $700 - $2,200 per quarter, depending on type of course taught and length of course Actual pay may be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as type of course taught; experience and training; geographic location; licensure and certifications; market factors; departmental budgets; and responsibility. Walden also offers other opportunities for its contributing faculty members, such as dissertation/doctoral study committee chair positions, research reviewing, and dissertation and doctoral study mentoring.
