Job Summary

Shippo is a shipping layer of the internet, providing world-class solutions to e-commerce businesses. As a Risk & Fraud Manager, you will protect the ecosystem from fraud and abuse, leading the charge in identifying patterns, designing proactive measures, and creating scalable processes. You will leverage technical expertise, data-driven approaches, and investigative mindset to build and execute strategies that tackle complex fraud issues. With a remote-first culture, flexible working options, and a comprehensive benefits package, Shippo offers a unique opportunity for success.

Before you read on, take a look around you. Everything you see has been shipped, often multiple times before reaching its destination. Global ecommerce sales are expected to total $5.5 trillion worldwide in 2022 and continue growing over the next few years. Here at Shippo, we are the shipping layer of the internet and we consider ourselves to be one of the core building blocks of e-commerce.

Our mission is to make merchants successful through world class shipping. With our products and solutions, we level the playing field by providing our customers with best-in-class solutions that otherwise wouldn’t be available to them. Through Shippo, e-commerce businesses, marketplaces, and platforms are able to connect to shipping carriers around the world from one API and dashboard. We provide our customers with the most competitive shipping rates, print labels, automated international documents, shipment tracking, facilitate the returns process and more.

We have a remote-first, globally distributed workforce and culture and are continually expanding. This means, any of our hires can be based anywhere globally, with the exception of Delaware, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, Hawaii, New Mexico and West Virginia. For locations outside of the US and Ireland, the employment contracts are powered by Remote.com (all Shippo benefits still apply). What is important to emphasize is that you can be successful at Shippo regardless of location.

How we'll deliver success:
As Shippo’s first Trust & Safety team member, you will take full ownership of protecting our ecosystem from fraud and abuse. You will lead the charge in identifying patterns of bad actors, designing proactive measures to mitigate risks, and creating scalable processes to safeguard our customers, partners, and company.

You will leverage your technical expertise, data-driven approach, and investigative mindset to build and execute strategies that tackle complex fraud issues. You will problem-solve and partner across the organization, collaborating with teams like Product, Engineering, and Operations to ensure our defenses and processes stay ahead of emerging threats. Your ability to analyze data, distill insights, and implement impactful solutions will be critical to your success.

You are skilled at navigating ambiguity, setting priorities, and maintaining focus in a fast-paced environment. You combine tactical execution with building our fraud strategy and take pride in owning your work from start to finish.

Design and build anti-abuse protections and counter-abuse strategies. Prioritize based on urgency and severity. Develop escalation protocols.
    • Communication and Collaboration: Communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences, both verbally and in writing. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand business requirements, present analysis results, and provide data-driven recommendations. Work closely with stakeholders to define business requirements and analytical needs.

    • Compliance and Law Enforcement Response. Provide input on compliance with company policies, carrier policies, and relevant regulations, including data privacy regulations. Respond to inquiries from law enforcement and government agencies, including subpoena requests, in collaboration with the Legal team.

    • Proficiency in data analysis tools and techniques (e.g.,Sift, Stripe RADAR, SQL, Looker, etc.).
    • Demonstrated success at building escalation protocols from the ground up.
    • Proven track record of balancing regulatory requirements with commercial objectives, ideally in high-growth or fast-paced environments.
    • Experience building trust and safety or compliance teams, with a strong emphasis on mentorship, growth, and team culture.
    • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to influence and partner with stakeholders across all levels of the organization.
    • Strategic mindset, with the ability to see the big picture while managing detailed and data-driven execution.
    • Comfort managing ambiguity and asking lots of questions.
    • Entrepreneurial mindset, taking ownership of your work and determined to find solutions.
