Senior Software Engineer - Back-end (Core Services)

Who You Are:

We are seeking a talented and experienced Senior Back-End Software Engineer to join our team and contribute to the development of our enterprise SaaS workflow automation platform. You'll be instrumental in designing and implementing scalable, distributed systems that power workflow automation, with a focus on event-driven architectures using Java and Apache Kafka. This role will join our Core Services team with focuses on user management, authentication and authorization, billing operations, administrative dashboards, and user journey management. 

What You'll Do

• Design and develop high-performance, scalable microservices using Java and Spring Boot

• Build and maintain event-driven data pipelines using Apache Kafka for real-time data processing

• Architect solutions that meet strict compliance requirements (HIPAA, SOC 2, PCI DSS)

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define system specifications and technical requirements

• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical decision-making processes

• Implement robust error handling, monitoring, and automated recovery mechanisms

• Participate in code reviews and maintain high code quality standards

• Design and implement APIs that integrate with various enterprise systems

How You'll Succeed

• Technical Leadership: Design scalable, event-driven microservices architecture using established patterns; actively engage, collaborate, and align on technical topics and team pursuits; and promote technical standards to accelerate team productivity, code quality, and system performance. 

• Solution Design: Efficiently build flexible and extensible application functionality adhering to industry best practices and Formstack quality standards.

• Team Acceleration and Success: Act as a leader by providing mentorship, respectful and pragmatic code review feedback, and producing reasonable documentation and/or other visual artifacts.

• Operational Excellence & Risk Mitigation: Implement advanced monitoring, observability, and automated recovery mechanisms. Design solutions to meet compliance and security protocols. Proactively identify potential risks in reliability, data integrity, security, or scalability. Exercise appropriate responsiveness to system issues or incidents. 

What We Are Looking For

• 7+ years of professional software development experience

• Strong expertise in Java and the Spring ecosystem (Spring Boot, Spring Cloud)

• Extensive experience with Apache Kafka, including topics, partitioning, and Kafka Streams

• Proven track record of building distributed systems at scale

• Experience with containerization (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes)

• Strong understanding of database technologies (both SQL and NoSQL)

• Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP)

• Experience with monitoring and observability tools (e.g., DataDog, Grafana)

• Must be fluent in written and spoken English

Bonus Points

• Experience in healthcare, fintech, or education technology sectors

• Familiarity with event sourcing and CQRS patterns

• Experience with reactive programming (Project Reactor/RxJava)

• Contributions to open-source projects

• Advanced degree in Computer Science or related field

• Salary Range: $100,000 - $115,000 USD/year

• Plus a potential annual bonus of up to 5% of the salary.

• This is a target starting cash range for a candidate who meets the minimum qualifications for this role. The final cash pay for this role will depend on a variety of factors, including a specific candidate’s experience, qualifications, skills, and projected impact.
