Staff Engineer - Backend (Store)

Hims & Hers is on a mission to empower people to live healthier lives. Our Store Backend Platform team plays a critical role in achieving this by building cutting-edge ecommerce services that provide a fast, reliable and frictionless telemedicine experience.

As a Staff Engineer on our Store Backend team, you will be a key technical leader responsible for designing and implementing scalable, high-performance solutions across our back-end ecommerce systems. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive architectural decisions, mentor engineers, and influence the direction of our platform. Your role will also involve engaging in technical platform and product discovery to identify user needs, ensure that our platforms scale with our business and solutions align with business objectives.

You Will:

• Lead the design and architecture of scalable and performant backend services that power our telehealth and ecommerce platforms

• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers on best practices, design patterns, and coding standards.

• Advocate your team’s technical needs and priorities within the broader engineering organization.

• Collaborate cross-functionally with product managers, architects, principal engineers and your team to guide decisions

• Work closely with other engineering teams to ensure seamless integration and communication across systems and services.

• Contribute to the vision for the team and the platform as technical leader, identifying new and strategic technologies and technical investments that improve security, scalability, reliability, and performance.

• Break down complex projects into clear, actionable tasks to drive successful outcomes.

• Implement observability practices across the platform, including logging, monitoring, and alerting to ensure system reliability and performance.

• Analyze performance metrics and user feedback to identify opportunities for improvement and drive optimization efforts.

• Create and maintain technical documentation for architecture and development processes.

• Contribute to operational excellence through on-call responsibilities which include issue resolution, root-cause analysis and code improvements to reduce toil

• Coach and mentor team members, including constructive feedback for code and design reviews

• Actively participate in retrospectives and help drive continuous improvement in our architecture, agile process and team culture

• Stay updated with industry trends, technologies, and best practices, and propose innovative solutions to improve the platform.

You Have:

• 12+ years as a software engineer, shipping production code. 

• Proven experience in designing, building and operating scalable backend applications and services in a cloud environment utilizing micro-service architectures.

• Proficiency in back-end technologies such as Java, Kotlin, PostgreSQL, Kubernetes and AWS.

• Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically and strategically.

• Experience with agile software development and delivery methodologies 

• Proficiency with continuous integration/delivery including automated unit and integration test strategies

• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across teams.

• Capable of prioritizing multiple projects in order to meet goals without management oversight.
